Ace-Chimney-Technician-Businessman

Ace Chimney Sweeps is based down in Elkton, Maryland, just a quick trip from Avondale, Pennsylvania. Our technicians head to Avondale regularly to help our valued clients with their chimney needs, from troubleshooting chimney leaks to converting old wood-burning fireplaces to the more convenient gas appliances.

Travis was a rock star. He came on time, did a full cleanup and check of our fireplace, brushed and cleaned all the logs, and even took out the bottom plate to clean it, cleaned the windows really well, cleaned up after he was done, and left the place spotless. He fixed a problem we had with the fireplace going on and off all the time, and after he was done, he let it go on for a bit to make sure it was working properly before he left. He was very courteous, and easy to talk to, and answered all our questions to our complete satisfaction. He even was kind enough to help us schedule our next appointment in 2024. We highly recommend Ace Chimney Sweeps and Travis in particular. It’s really nice to see there are still people out there with such strong work ethics, and it makes me feel safer to use the fireplace this winter. I really hope we get him again, next August.

What Are the Most Common Ways Water Enters a Chimney?

Water is one of the most damaging elements a chimney system can face, and if your flue and fireplace aren’t adequately protected, you’re bound to face some serious damage. What are the most common ways water enters a chimney flue? And how can you stop it?

  • Through a missing or damaged chimney cap. The chimney cap is a protective cover that fits overtop the flue opening, preventing rain and snow from falling directly into the chimney. If your cap is damaged, missing, or improperly installed or fitted, it may be time to invest in something more reliable.
  • Through a cracked or deteriorated chimney crown. The crown is the cement surface at the top of the chimney that seals around the flue and slopes away to shed water. If it’s cracked or crumbling, water can seep through and damage the masonry and interior components of the chimney.
  • Through damaged or missing flashing. Flashing is the metal seal that sits where the chimney meets the roof, preventing water from entering this notoriously vulnerable area. If it’s rusted, loose, or improperly installed, water can leak in at the base of the chimney, causing roof leaks and interior water stains.
  • Through porous or deteriorating masonry. Masonry materials are naturally porous, so if they’re not waterproofed, exposure to the elements can wear down your bricks and mortar joints. And once the water is absorbed, it can freeze and expands in cold weather, further worsening any damage.
  • Through improperly sealed or damaged chase covers. On prefabricated or factory-built chimneys, the chase cover sits on top of the chimney structure and prevents water entry, acting as a metal crown. If it’s rusted, sagging, or has gaps, water can collect and leak into the chase.

If you notice any signs of water damage or entry, such as staining on the exterior masonry, water in the firebox, musty odors or mold growth, efflorescence (white powdery deposits on the brickwork), rusted metal components, or crumbling mortar or spalling bricks, don’t wait to call us in. We can inspect the system, then apply appropriate repairs and leak prevention services.
